From Curiosity to Craft: My Journey as a Self-Taught Logo Designer
Hello! I’m Chinthaka Gunaratne — a full-time logo and brand identity designer, specializing in crafting unique lettering logomarks and visual identities that help brands stand out. My journey didn’t start with a degree or formal education. I’m entirely self-taught — and to this day, I continue to learn new skills, explore new techniques, and grow as a designer.
The Beginning
Right after finishing my higher education, while waiting to start university, I met a neighbor who was a freelance graphic designer. He was a few years older than me and introduced me to the world of graphic design. Intrigued, I started talking with him often. He generously taught me the basics of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and I instantly fell in love with the craft.
Fueled by passion, I practiced tirelessly. Once my parents bought me a laptop, I dove deep into online tutorials and started exploring platforms like Fiverr and Upwork. Although I had a basic understanding of the software, I lacked professional skills. But I was determined.
Finding My Path
I gravitated toward logo design. I began by recreating famous logos to understand their structure and design principles. Soon after, I started designing my own simple logos — and to my surprise, orders began to roll in through Fiverr.
In those early days, it sometimes took me weeks to complete a single project. But I gave each one my all, and within a few months, I was receiving 4–5 orders per month. The pay was modest — often just $5 to $10 per logo — but the satisfaction of creating something meaningful was priceless.
Then, university began. My focus shifted to academics, and I found myself with little time for design work. But something didn’t feel right. Just one month in, I realized I didn’t belong there. So I made the bold decision to leave university and pursue design full time.
Growing into My Craft
Back home, I dedicated myself fully to freelancing. I worked tirelessly — sometimes finishing multiple projects in a single day. Over time, I discovered my natural flair for lettering-based logos. It reminded me of the school days when I was asked to decorate stages with hand-lettered signage — a creative spark that had always been there.
That spark grew into a passion. I began studying lettering design seriously and focused my services around that niche. In the last 2.5 years, I’ve completed over 1,000 logo design projects across major freelance platforms.
I’ve collaborated with a wide range of clients — from corporate companies to solo entrepreneurs. My portfolio includes work for jewelry brands, financial institutions, clothing lines, realtors, tech startups, restaurants, law firms, healthcare providers, marketing agencies, photographers, music artists, and many more. Each project is a chance to help a brand find its voice and stand out in a crowded marketplace.
